Seageats are notorious for DoA (Dead on Arrival) and, of two purchased, 1 was dead. Fortunately they (Seagate) operate a (relativley) hassle free Guarantee (replacement) service. You log-in on their web site as 'guest' and submit the Serial Number. If it's still in Warreenty - and this one was (you get 1 year from Seagate) - you are issued with an RMA number withough needing to submit silly Invoices or confess where you bought it. Of course you do have to pack it up and send it off yourself to the UPS warehouse in Coventry (at you own expense)., but UPS then sends it on to Seagate in Holland ... where they 'test' it. About 2 weeks later, you can expect to recieve a 'refurbished' replacement (but hang onto the packaging, just in case). Once the drive gets past the DoA period, Seagates are no worse than any other disk drive - in fact the Barracuda range actually has quite a good reputation - although Hitachi's are significantly more reliable (but also cost significantly more) NB. I only ever use Seagate drives in a RAID Mirror configuration and suggest you do the same :-)Read full review
